The film opens with the story of an upper middle-class commodities broker Louis Winthorpe whose employers play a cruel yet ironical joke on him. He has his life turned upside down when his riches and extravagancies are taken away from him and his living conditions are replaced with that of Billy Ray Valentine, an African – African street hustler and con – man. These men struggle to adjust to their new lives but the process of their adjustment is shown with the typical format of a film belonging to the genre of comedy. However, they soon uncover the ploy of Louis’ employer and decide to play it back on them.
